Thousands of people demonstrated today in the streets of Belarus against the country’s president, Alexander Lukashenko.

Indeed, more than 100 people were arrested in Minsk, Belarus, during the march against President Alexander Lukashenko in which thousands participated despite threats from the police to open fire.

“More than 100 people have been detained in Minsk so far,” Belarusian Interior Ministry spokeswoman Olga Chemodanova said.

The former Soviet nation is beset by protests after Lukashenko won the August 9 election victory over Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the popular opposition candidate. In a message released before the demonstration, Tikhanovskaya urged Belarusians to carry out their demands “peacefully, but persistently”.
