TASS /. Russia enforces US laws regarding the recognition of US presidents, as it is supposed to be in the electoral process, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a press conference on Monday.

“With regard to the processes that continue in the United States in the context of past elections, I would like to reiterate that Moscow does not recognize one presidential candidate over another. An American president is recognized under the laws of this country. This is what we will act, “the minister said, responding to a question on whether Moscow will recognize the new US president once the electoral college has voted.

In the United States, the president is elected indirectly, through a college of voters, each with votes proportional to the population of his state. To win, a candidate must obtain 270 electoral votes. On Monday, voters began voting in the capitals of their respective states. The result of this vote will determine the next head of state. This result will then have to be approved by both houses of the US Congress. The new president will officially take office on January 20.
